Introduction
The narrative around large language models shifted dramatically in late 2025. We moved from “chatbots that answer questions” to autonomous agents that take actions — agents that call APIs, write and execute code, browse the web, manage files, and coordinate with other agents. This shift introduces architectural challenges that few teams were prepared for.
In this post, I’ll cover the production patterns, gotchas, and infrastructure decisions that matter when you deploy LLM-powered agents in a real enterprise environment.

1. The Anatomy of a Production Agent
A production-grade agent is more than a prompt with tool calls. It consists of:

Core components
Planner — the LLM that decides the next action given current state + goal
Router — dispatches tool calls to the correct executor; handles retries and fallbacks
Tool Executor — sandboxed environment for running code, calling APIs, browsing
Memory Layer — working memory (context window), episodic memory (vector DB), semantic memory (knowledge graph)
Guardrails — input/output classifiers, rate limiters, cost caps, human-in-the-loop triggers
2. Tool Calling Design Patterns
The most impactful architectural decision in an agentic system is how you design your tool interface.

3. Multi-Agent Orchestration

5. Safety and Guardrails

Conclusion
Agentic AI is no longer experimental — it’s in production at companies ranging from startups to Fortune 500s. The teams succeeding with it aren’t those with the best prompts; they’re the ones who treated their agents like distributed systems: designing for failure, instrumenting everything, and building meaningful guardrails.
The architecture is complex, but the payoff — tasks that used to take humans hours, completed reliably in minutes — makes it worth getting right.
