Introduction
Rust adoption in backend services has crossed an inflection point. What was once “that systems language with a steep learning curve” is now the language of choice for latency-sensitive services, data pipelines, and infrastructure tooling at companies like Cloudflare, Discord, Dropbox, and Meta.
In this guide, I’ll walk through the practical aspects of building a production-quality REST API in Rust using the modern async stack (Axum + Tokio + SQLx), benchmark it against equivalent Python (FastAPI) and Go (Gin) services, and give you an honest assessment of when the trade-offs make sense.

3. Benchmarks: Rust vs. Go vs. Python
Testing a simple GET /users/:id endpoint (single Postgres query, JSON response) on the same hardware (8-core AMD EPYC, 16GB RAM, local Postgres):

Rust is roughly 2× Go and 15× Python for this workload. Memory is even more dramatic.
When the performance matters (and when it doesn’t)
Performance rarely justifies a rewrite for most CRUD APIs. The Rust advantage matters when:
Latency is on the critical path — payment processing, real-time gaming, search serving
You’re paying for compute — the memory density difference (Rust pods are ~⅛ the size) becomes significant at scale
You need predictable latency — Rust has no GC pauses; Go’s GC is good but not zero
You’re writing CPU-intensive logic — ML inference serving, data transformation pipelines
It doesn’t matter much when you’re I/O-bound on a database that takes 10–100ms per query, or when your team ships features faster in Go.
4. The Learning Curve: Honest Assessment
What actually trips up newcomers
The borrow checker: The canonical pain point. Most developers spend 2–4 weeks fighting the borrow checker before the mental model clicks. After that, it becomes a superpower — the compiler catches data races that would be runtime bugs in other languages.

Async/await complexity: Rust’s async model is more explicit than Go’s goroutines or Python’s asyncio. Send bounds and Pin can be confusing initially.
Compile times: A clean build of a mid-size Rust service takes 60–90 seconds. Incremental builds are 5–15s. This is improving with mold linker and the cranelift debug backend.
Mitigation strategies
Use cargo check instead of cargo build during development (10× faster, catches type errors)
Enable sccache for distributed compilation caching
Split your project into crates early to improve parallelism
Use cargo nextest instead of cargo test for faster test runs
5. Migration Strategy
Don’t rewrite everything. Use the Strangler Fig pattern:
Identify the highest-value candidates — CPU-intensive services, latency-sensitive hot paths
Write the Rust service with the same interface as the service it replaces
Route a percentage of traffic via your service mesh or load balancer
Monitor — error rates, latency, memory
Cut over — once stable, deprecate the old service
Discord famously migrated their presence service from Go to Rust this way, reducing p99 latency from 100ms to 10ms and halving memory usage.
Conclusion
Rust is no longer an exotic choice for backend services. The async ecosystem is stable, the tooling is excellent, and the performance ceiling is real. The cost is a steeper initial learning curve and longer compile times.
For latency-sensitive services where you’re optimizing every millisecond, or for teams willing to invest in the learning curve for long-term gains, Rust is an exceptional choice. For teams that need to move fast and where Go or Python already performs well enough — those are good choices too.
The best time to write your first Rust service was two years ago. The second best time is now.
